Remarkably in November of that year he made his senior debut against the Pacific Islanders in Lansdowne Road. Fitzgerald was also capped at Leinster and Ireland schools in 2005. Luke is the 999th player to be capped for Ireland, and a recent run of good form for Leinster has earned him a place in the 2009 Six Nations squad.

Luke returned from the 2009 Lions tour in fantastic form, however in his first outing for Ireland against Australia in the Guinness Autumn Series of 2009, he sustained a knee injury which would require a lengthy rehab phase, ruling him out of action for 4-6 months. Typical of the player he made a full recovery for Leinster.

Despite missing out on the 2011 Rugby World Cup squad, he began the 2011/12 season apace. A neck injury that required surgery saw him miss Leinster's 2012 Heineken Cup final. Luke returned to action for Leinster in the closing stages of the 2012/13 Heineken Cup pool stages showing incredible form and earning a call up to the Ireland squad for the 2013 Six nations.

Luke ruptured his ACL during Ireland's final 2013 RBS Six Nations game against Italy and had to be replaced after coming on himself as a replacement. The injury will rule him out for the remainder of the 2013 season and comes off the back of a lengthy injury lay-off following a serious neck injury in 2012.
