A member of Ireland’s 2007 Rugby World Cup squad, Stephen is a strong-running back rower who relishes a big hit. Born in Portadown where he played his underage rugby, Stephen has made steady progress with Ulster and Ireland, very much coming of age this season with consistent powerful performances for the Northern Province. He made his debut against the Pacific Islanders in the last international at the old Lansdowne Road in November 2006.

Ever present in the Ireland No6 shirt throughout the 2009 Grand Slam campaign (started every game), Stephen was selected to tour South Africa with the Lions that summer. He scored a try on debut with the Lions against the Golden Lions, and the following week, he scored another try against the Cheetahs. However a training ground injury prematurley ended his Lions involvement, but Ferris was back for the 2009 Autumn tests where he played against Australia, Fiji and South Africa.

Despite a knee injury during the early part of the 2009-10 season, Stephen recovered to make it back into the Ireland 2010 Six Nations starting XV where he continued his excellent form
